First of all, why put mega-resources into a state whose demographics are not representative of the United States?
Iowa has 99 counties, many of them rural, 84 of them losing population. (And presidential candidates are expected to visit every single one.) The demographics of Adams County, which has lost 70% of its population since 1900, is fairly typical of the many.
39 counties have lost more than 30% of their population since 1900 or later:
- 13 of them more than 50% (purple)
- 11 of them 40-49% (orange)
- 15 of them 30-39% (yellow)
ISU analysis of census data shows that majority of Iowa communities are shrinking. (Iowa State University, 5/27/2014)
