The Kennedys were members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Auburn, Washington. In the years after the Nelsons moved from Auburn, Harry and Elfrieda remained in touch with my parents every Christmas, oftentimes enclosing the standard form letter, or Elfreida enclosing a brief handwritten note in her later years. None of these, unfortunately, survive. (Harry died in 1995, Elfrieda in 2004.)
When reminiscing about their years in Auburn, my parents always spoke of the Kennedys with great fondness. I think they helped to make a young couple, my parents, both of whom were far removed from their own families, feel comfortable in their new surroundings.
A Kathleen Kennedy still lives in Auburn, if the Internet is to be believed.
