Although population statewide has generally grown over the past century, this growth has mostly occurred in metropolitan Iowa, while rural Iowa has experienced declines. Over a century ago in 1910, nearly one-half (48.1%) of the state’s population lived in rural counties, while about onethird (32.0%) lived in metropolitan counties and the remaining one-fifth (19.9%) in micropolitan counties. By 2010 this balance had tilted, with now only one-quarter (26.5%) of the population living in rural counties and over onehalf (56.5%) living in metropolitan counties, while mircopolitan populations remained unchanged (17.0%).
