3.1 million chickens zapped by bird flu at two CAFOs in southeast Wisconsin

Headline:  Wisconsin State Journal, 3/5/2026

The positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Jefferson County marks the county’s second case so far this year and fourth since September.
The latest Jefferson County case occurred in a facility that housed more than 1.6 million birds, while the Walworth County case took place in a facility with nearly 1.5 million birds. Both facilities are located near Whitewater and are owned by Daybreak Foods LLC.
The affected premises have been quarantined to restrict the movement of poultry and birds on the property have been killed to prevent the spread of the disease and will not enter the food system, officials said.
