An expert on garden history, Jane Brown popularised and elevated the subject at a time when interest in conserving historic gardens was gathering momentum. In the process, she helped to rehabilitate the languishing reputation of Sir Edwin Lutyens, through her part as an organiser of the exhibition dedicated to him at the Hayward Gallery in 1981, and by writing about his youthful collaboration with the garden designer Gertrude Jekyll in her seminal work Gardens of a Golden Afternoon.

She was inspired to write the book while studying landscape architecture at Thames Polytechnic. It took ten years to finish and required research in the Jekyll archive in the University of California at Berkeley. Her husband took many of the photographs. The book was both a commercial and critical success when it was published in 1982. It is an account of a unique partnership, where each understood the interconnection between the two disciplines and respected the expertise of the other.
