Roy Graber reports:
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that the presence of the virus was confirmed in the flock, which included 35,400 turkeys, on November 19.
With this latest case, South Dakota has lost 17 commercial poultry flocks to HPAI so far in 2025. All but one of those have involved turkeys, with the other being a flock of 633,900 laying hens in Aurora County.
However, this is the first time this year that HPAI has been confirmed in Edmunds County. In 2024, the county had four commercial upland gamebird flocks affected by HPAI, and in 2023, four turkey flocks there were infected, with those flocks involving meat turkeys, turkey breeder hens and turkey breeder replacement hens. Four Edmunds County flocks were also affected in 2022, again with those flocks involving meat turkeys, turkey breeder hens and turkey breeder replacement hens.
