100 Years of Frank Sinatra: "Some Enchanted Evening"
Musically, 1949 was not a good year for Frank Sinatra. He doesn't appear on Billboard's list of top 30 songs of the year. Popular Song's top 40? Shut out. And he's not among the artists included on the Time-Life series Your Hit Parade 1949.
According to Nancy Sinatra, her dad's first release of the year, "Some Enchanted Evening", was panned by Downbeat for a lack of intimacy and "a few off-pitch" notes. To add insult to injury, Perry Como's version was one of the most popular songs of the year, spending 5 weeks at #1 during the summer and finishing the year at #4 on the Billboard Top 30.
On the other hand, 1949 was a very good year for a previously childless couple in Auburn, Washington. Due to a tipped uterus, Mom had trouble conceiving. It wasn't until the mid-1980s when I learned about the details of my conception.
