The teachers, who were attending a summer training program, are helping West Virginia in another kind of transformation. Huntington's population peaked at 86,353 in 1950. Its 2017 estimated population is 48,113 -- a drop of 48,240 (50%).
Incorporated in 1871, the City of Huntington is the county seat of Cabell County and the second largest city in West Virginia. Located on the Ohio River, it is 50 miles west of Charleston and 150 miles east/southeast of Cincinnati.
