Kodichi Lawrence reports for WKOW:
State Representative Jenna Jacobson has officially launched her campaign for Wisconsin’s 17th Senate district, challenging longtime Republican Senator Howard Marklein in a race that could shift the balance of power in the state legislature.
Jacobson kicked off her campaign at Ridgeway Elementary School — a building that closed permanently in 2020. She cited the school’s closure as symbolic of what she calls Republican failures in education funding. Specifically, she pointed to Senator Marklein’s role as co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee, the powerful legislative body responsible for writing the state budget.
Currently, Republicans hold an 18–15 majority in the Wisconsin State Senate. According to UW–Madison political science professor Howard Schweber, at least three of those Republican-held seats, including district 17, are considered vulnerable.

The main Democratic advantage:  The district -- Democratic Green County (Monroe, New Glarus), in particular -- is no longer gerrymandered to favor Republicans.  And Trumpy Juneau County (Mauston) is no longer in the mix.
