"We do want to keep this bill clean with respect to parental rights," said Sen. Ken Rozenboom, chair of the Senate Education Committee.

The Senate's amendment Wednesday significantly broadens the ban on school books with sex acts. Under The House's previous version of the legislation, the bill mandated the removal of school books that contained "graphic" depictions of sex acts. Wednesday's bill would remove books with any description or visual depiction of a sex act, which Iowa law defines as list of specific kinds of sexual contact between two or more people.
The bill allows an exception for religious books, including the Bible, the Torah and the Koran, which Iowa law already states "shall not be excluded from any public school."
