Juanita Moore (1914-2014)

Juanita Moore, Oscar-Nominated Actress, Dies at 99. (The New York Times, 1/5/2014)

Career peek.  Ms. Moore received a best supporting actress nomination for her role in the 1959 film “Imitation of Life,” in which she played opposite Lana Turner in a story about two single mothers, one black and one white. It was only the fifth time an African-American performer had been nominated for an Oscar.

Fannie Hurst's 1933 novel and the 1934 and 1959 versions of the movie was the basis of at lesaat one doctoral  dissertation:  Mammy versus mulatta: A rhetorical analysis of the act of passing and the influence of controlling images in Fannie Hurst’s “Imitation of Life”.

1 copy of "Born to be Hurt" in LINKcat.  It's checked out.

You'll get a brief glimpse of Lana's reaction shot in this scene at 2:06.

My 5th grade teacher was named Juanita, though we, of course, always called her Mrs. Johnson. She had pock marks on her usually florid face from a childhood bout with scarlet fever.

Juanita's popularity as a baby name for girls peaked at #48 in 1924.
