National Bible Week: Only Christians need apply

With 'holiday tree' and 'National Bible Week,' church-state controversy begins anew.  (Madison, com, 11/8/2019)
Assembly Republicans on Tuesday are likely to pass a resolution recognizing the week of Thanksgiving as “National Bible Week.” The resolution states the week “encourages us to read the Bible,” a document the resolution says “contributed to the molding of the spiritual, moral, and social fiber of our citizenry.”
The resolution was co-sponsored by Republican Reps. Paul Tittl, Manitowoc; Scott Allen, Waukesha; Janel Brandtjen, Menomonee Falls; Barbara Dittrich, Oconomowoc; Rick Gundrum, Slinger; Cody Horlacher, Mukwonago; Jesse James, Altoona; Scott Krug, Nekoosa; Bob Kulp, Stratford; Gae Magnafici, Dresser; Dave Murphy, Greenville; Ron Tusler, Harrison; Chuck Wichgers, Muskego; Shannon Zimmerman, River Falls; and James Edming, Glen Flora.

Sponsors, mapped.

Greetings from Trump's America: Citrus County, Florida, where the 5 male parrots on the county commission deny library subscription to The New York Times

"Fools rush in, where wise men fear to tread."

A library wanted a New York Times subscription. Officials refused, citing Trump and ‘fake news.’.  (Washington Post, 11/5/2019)
In a move that is generating intense online backlash, all five members of the commission agreed to reject the library’s request. The discussion took place Oct. 24, the same day the Trump administration announced plans to cancel federal agencies’ subscriptions to the Times and The Washington Post. While there’s no apparent connection — the Citrus County meeting began several hours before the Wall Street Journal broke the news of the new edict — the controversy unfolding in central Florida highlights how politicians nationwide are parroting the president’s disparaging rhetoric about the media.

On the fiction shelves at Madison Central

Ernest J. Gaines, Author of ‘The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,’ Is Dead at 86.  (The New York Times, 11/5/2019)

“A Lesson Before Dying,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, is the story of a young Southern black man’s struggle for dignity as he awaits execution in prison.
Charles R. Larson, reviewing it in The Chicago Tribune, wrote, “This majestic, moving novel is an instant classic, a book that will be read, discussed and taught beyond the rest of our lives.”

Real life adventures in rural America: The Scott County Illinois oh yes we have no bananas edition

Essentially, another chapter in the Trump's America series

Farm Country Feeds America. But Just Try Buying Groceries There. (The New York Times. 11/5/2019)
The stakes of failure were huge. Farm towns like Winchester that produce beef, corn and greens to feed the world are becoming America’s unlikeliest food deserts as traditional grocery stores are forced out of business by fewer shoppers and competition from dollar-store chains. Their exodus has left rural towns worried about how they can hold on to families, businesses and their future if there is nowhere to buy even a banana.

But there is a library

And now, as the Times article points out, there's also a food coop.  With bananas!
