USA movie box office: First weekend of the February (2017-2023)

 
The USA box office on the 1st weekend of February 2023 was up 25% compared to last year when "Jackass Forever" was the top-grossing movie.  

And it's down 13% compared to the 2020 peak when "Birds of Prey" was the top-grossing movie.

The creepy thriller, from Universal, just barely beat the weekend’s other new wide release, “80 for Brady,” which scored in second place with $12.5 million from 2,912 North American theaters. That’s a major win for Paramount, which backed the sports comedy starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, because older audiences have been reluctant to go to theaters in pandemic times

Saturday's box office on the 1st weekend of February 2023 was up 26% compared to last year when "Jackass Forever" was the top-grossing movie.  

And it's down 21% compared to the 2017 peak when "Split" was the top-grossing movie.

Globally, “Avatar: The Way of Water” stands as the fourth-biggest movie in history with $2.128 billion. It ranks behind only “Avatar” ($2.92 billion), “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.7 billion) and “Titanic” ($2.19 billion) in terms of worldwide ticket sales. For those keeping track, three of those four movies were directed by Cameron.

And it's down 17% compared to the 2020 peak when "Birds of Prey" was the top-grossing movie.

“Knock at the Cabin,” the latest from M. Night Shyamalan and Universal, is currently estimated to take the top spot with a $14.5 million opening weekend from 3,643 theaters. That is on the low end of pre-release projections in the mid-to-high teens and slightly below the $16.8 million opening of Shyamalan’s 2021 film “Old.” 
Audience and critical reception for the horror film, which stars Dave Bautista as the leader of a cult that demands a family sacrifice one of themselves to prevent the apocalypse, has been mixed. “Knock” has earned Rotten Tomatoes scores of 68% critics and 65% audience, but has also earned a dismal C- grade on CinemaScore, a sign that the film will not leg out over the course of February.
