Deaths of numerous crows, other birds and thousands of poultry have led to concerns of avian influenza spreading in Anantapur district, prompting officials to intensify surveillance and precautionary measures. Following large-scale poultry deaths in several parts of the district, laboratory tests confirmed avian influenza. Crows had also been found dead in B.K. Samudram and Pamidi mandals, official sources said. One-kilometre radius around farms with large-scale poultry deaths has been designated as infected zone, while areas extending up to 10 kilometres have been placed under alert. Animal husbandry, revenue, medical and police departments have stepped up efforts to contain the infection.
