Marshall took the stage at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson on Saturday alongside his Democratic rival, the Rev. Adam Hamilton. 
The boisterous crowd made its presence felt throughout the forum as Marshall repeatedly found himself on the defensive navigating questions about the Trump administration’s controversial foreign policy agenda and tariff regime. 
At one point, Marshall got cut off mid-answer by chants of “shame on you” from the audience as he attempted to explain his approach to collecting on patients’ unpaid medical bills as a rural doctor in Great Bend. 
Marshall accused Hamilton of building a campaign on platitudes instead of substance, repeatedly questioning what the founding pastor of the nation’s largest United Methodist church believes in. 
“He’s too weak. He’s too woke. He doesn’t stand for anything,” Marshall said. “He tries to be all things to all people, and that’s not what you want from a senator in Kansas.” 
The crowd erupted when Hamilton issued his rebuttal. 
“I’m pretty sure if Jesus were here, you would call him woke,” Hamilton quipped.  [emphasis added]
