Intro to chapter 14:
To right and left of the highway, just north of Cumberland, rises Wills Mountain, a typical Appalachian ridge. Thought cut squarely in two by Wills Creek, it rather curiously maintains the same name on both sides, as if the roots of the mountain joined beneath the running water, or else as if even the early pioneers who fixed the name recognized the geological unity of the two halves, accidentally divided, as it were, by the creek.
This is now.
