The pick came after Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper last month kicked back a criminal referral from the Wisconsin Ethics Commission, saying there wasn’t sufficient evidence to bring charges. That left the commission with the option of picking a DA from one of eight counties bordering Waukesha County or asking the Department of Justice to step in. 

On Tuesday, after about an eight-hour closed meeting, commission Vice Chair Maryann Sumi plucked a slip of paper out of a hat in a blind draw to select Washington County out of the eight possible counties. 

The referral was part of a slew of campaign finance violations announced in February alleging Brandtjen, one of former President Donald Trump’s campaign committees, eight individuals and three county Republican parties worked to boost Adam Steen, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, in his primary bid against Vos, R-Rochester, in 2022.
