Mayville Retains Its Wheel Tax

Mayville keeps its wheel tax. (Beaver Dam Daily Citizen, 10/12/2011)

Excerpt:    The Mayville Common Council tabled a number of decisions while working on its 2012 budget Tuesday night, but did vote to keep the wheel tax.

The finance committee of the whole discussed employee wages, staff education and taxes as well as the wheel tax. The tax is estimated to bring in approximately $50,000 in revenue for 2012.

"It has made a sizable impact in the last three years," alderman Dave Pasbrig said.

Mayville is one of a few places in Wisconsin that has a wheel tax. People that live within the city limits are required to pay a $10 tax per registered vehicle. There is also a $10 tax in the city of Beloit and St. Croix County. The city of Milwaukee has a $20 wheel tax.

"$9.90 comes back to the city and 10 cents is held in Madison," Alderwoman Kathy Sertich said.

The common council brings the wheel tax back to the table every year hoping the city will be financially stable enough to do away with it
