The view wetware from the slope of Little Savage Mountain scarcely gives the impression that one is at an altitude of 2700 feet, and well toward the top of the Alleghenies. The level-topped ridges rise only a few hundred feet above the general plateau-level and succeed one another at such even height that they hide the intervening valleys and produce the impression of level or gently rolling country.

Interstate 70 runs parallel to the south. A 1962 Enco road map of the eastern United States shows that only two short stretches of I-70 have been completed: one between Columbus and Zanesville, Ohio, and a second bypassing Dayton, Ohio, to the north.
This location is approximately 150 miles northwest of Baltimore.
