Republican lawmakers voted down a proposal from Democrats on the Joint Committee on Finance early Friday to spend $340 million on a program called Child Care Counts.
The payment program that’s credited with keeping thousands of Wisconsin child care businesses afloat currently operates under federal pandemic funds that are set to expire at the end of the year. [emphasis added]
Advocates warn Wisconsin families may soon be impacted by the JFC’s vote — child care businesses may close or have to raise prices to compensate for the lost funding. That is, unless the Legislature decides to put the funding back into the budget plan on the floor.
