More Disagreements at the Community Library

Excerpt: The Community Library Board of Trustees sought to distance itself from a library aid group Monday.

Ken Mangold, who was elected president of the board on Monday night, introduced a proposal to create additional separation between the board and the Friends of the Community Library.

Last month, the Friends group stated it would not put any more money toward a new library for those two communities. The Friends have raised more than $50,000 for a new building and were frustrated with a lack of progress on the project.

The Twin Lakes Library building is 3,300 square feet, while the Salem branch is 13,000 square feet.

Mangold’s proposal would:

— Bar a member of the library board from being an officer with the Friends of the Community Library.

— Have the library director appoint a representative to the Friends group.

— Give more control — and more reporting of gifts — to the library board.

“They have become not the friends of the library, but a political action committee,” Mangold said.
