State lawmakers have struggled to find a way to continue that support. In the last legislative session, Democrats introduced a bill that would have infused an additional $480 million in childcare subsidies, but it failed to gain traction in the Republican-controlled Legislature.
Gov. Tony Evers included childcare in his budget proposal last year, but that funding was among more than 600 items the Republican-led legislative budget-writing committee stripped from his proposal.
As part of a bipartisan budget deal, Evers and Republican Legislative leaders ultimately agreed to extend $110 million in childcare subsidies to providers for a year, but those funds end June 30. Another $66 million will go to providers who offer 4K education starting in 2027.
In recent years, Republican lawmakers have proposed bills that would allow childcare providers to assign more children to staff members under state law, but those efforts have stalled. [Obviously, these GOP goofballs have never spent any appreciable amount of time with young children. Emphasis added.]
