In the year since Roe v. Wade was overturned, Iowa Republicans have carefully avoided passing any new abortion restrictions as they waited for a court decision that would clarify legal protections for abortion at the state level.
But the Iowa Supreme Court’s 3-3 tie earlier this month has offered little clarity, leaving a 2018 “fetal heartbeat” law blocked and keeping abortion legal in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Republicans are furious at the decision and eager to act. But their options have drawbacks.
