Population loss in rural Nebraska: Perkins County

Benkelman is the county seat of Dundy County.

Population loss by degrees:  70-79%, 60-69%, 50-59%.


Percentage of population 25 and older with a bachelor's degree:
  • 22.9% - Perkins County
  • 30.6% - Nebraska
  • 30.9% - U.S.
Percentage of population 65 and older:
  • 23.3% - Perkins County
  • 15.4% - Nebraska
  • 15.6% - U.S.


The last time Perkins County voted for a Democratic candidate for president was in 1936.  (Barry Goldwater won by 2.0 percentage points in 1964, and George Wallace received 7.7% of the vote in 1968.)

Coming in at No. 69 in population rank with 2,929, Perkins County showed a loss of just 41 (1.4 percent) from 2010-2018. While PC saw a decrease over the eight-year span, an increase of 35 (1.2 percent), was shown from 2017-18. 
Other than neighboring Chase County and nearby Arthur County which showed population increases, all nearby counties showed decreases of 2.5 percent or more.
