The dorm was being built to house foreign students through the J-1 visa program. Typically in recent years more than 3,000 such students work at Dells-area tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants. The building was a complete loss, estimated at $5 million, according to a Delton Fire Department press release.

Czuprynko said the impact of J-1 students is tremendous in Wisconsin Dells and Lake Delton. He estimates that the local tourism industry needs approximately 10 percent of the population of the four-county area to fill summer jobs and that is not going to happen only using local help — and even help from U.S. workers outside of the Dells area and Wisconsin.
