The Colosseum

Construction of the Colosseum, originally called the Flavian Amphitheater, started in 72 A.D.

For nearly 450 years, until the fall of Rome, it was the site of wild animal hunts, executions, and gladiatorial contests.

Seating capacity:  60,000.  (In the first century A.D., Rome's population was approximately 1,000,000.)

There were 80 entrance arches.

As we discovered yesterday, viewing photos of this still impressive structure is nothing like being there in person, standing in awe.
