Excerpt:  A small homemade bomb exploded at the Waterloo Public Library at about 5 p.m. Saturday, just as the building was closing for the day.

The blast did little more than make a loud bang — there were no injuries or major damage — but it has left library officials frustrated, said Sheryl McGovern, Waterloo executive library director.

McGovern described the device as a “bottle bomb,” a noisy but not necessarily destructive annoyance often associated with adolescent pranksters.

“I’m annoyed that someone would do this in a public space,” McGovern said. “It was a senseless, stupid thing to do.”
