Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Board Presented with 2 Budget-Cutting Alternatives

Link to March 24 Charlotte Observer article, "Library's leaders get 2 alternatives".

Excerpt: The two alternatives outlined Wednesday morning by Brown:

SCENARIO 1:

Libraries open five days a week, eight hours a day. Employees take pay cuts of 5 percent to 20 percent (higher-paid employees take the bigger cuts). Between 82 and 84 people will be laid off.

There will be significant cuts in programs such as story hours, classes for job-seekers, and book clubs.

SCENARIO 2:

Libraries open five days a week, eight hours a day. All employees take a 20 percent pay cut (through 10-day furloughs). No layoffs.

Most, and probably all, special programs will be eliminated.

The Library Board is meeting this morning. (Wednesday, March 24)
