Green Bay Press-Gazette Editorial Board Supports Use of Federal Stimulus Money for Broadband

Link to February 22 Green Bay Press-Gazette editorial, "Better Internet wise use of dollars".

Excerpt: Rep. Phil Montgomery, R-Ashwaubenon, said Thursday that the government-funded jobs are good for the economy only if they don't create an unfair advantage for other Internet service providers.

"What they have to show me is whether they're going to be competing against the private sector," Montgomery said.

The real beneficiaries, however, are the rural residents who will have greater and more immediate access to information via high-speed Internet.

Brown County Library Director Lynn Stainbrook said that some users in branches, such as Denmark, Pulaski and Wrightstown, are at a disadvantage when they need to take an online class or apply for jobs via the Internet and are hindered by a slow connection. Sometimes the system "times out," she said, and the user must start over again.

"We have a lot of people who are taking tests to prep for online classroom work, or they are finishing up a class and need a place to be proctored to take a test," Stainbrook said. "People are trying to increase their knowledge and abilities for this technological world we're in."

Retiring Guy is with Lynn. Let's help the folks who need a fair advantage.
