ALA Adds Award for Gay and Lesbian Literature

Excerpt: An award for gay and lesbian literature will be included in the American Library Association's annual announcement of children's prizes, a list which features the prestigious and influential Caldecott and Newbery medals.

The library association issued a statement Monday saying that the Stonewall Children's and Young Adult Literature Award has been added to the ALA's Youth Media Awards, watched closely by educators and librarians as they decide which books to add to their collections. The Stonewall prize honors "English-language works for children and teens of exceptional merit relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered experience." Stonewall awards for adult books were started nearly 40 years ago, but the children's category only now.

Excerpt:   Moreover, there are troubling aspects of Mr. Heiner's record. He led the fight that defeated the 2007 library tax referendum, for example, which would have paid for expansion and renovation of the city's libraries with a trifling increase of two-tenths of 1 percentage point in the city's occupation tax. His view that improvements could be made without the tax has not been supported by subsequent events.

Sportier than a Chevrolet but less uppity than an Oldsmobile or Buick, the best Pontiacs, recognizable by their split grille and red arrowhead emblem in the middle, were stylish yet affordable cars with big, macho engines.
