The Wisconsin Legislature has spent $26.2 million in taxpayer money on legal fees to private law firms since 2017, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel analysis found.
Under a Democratic governor and state attorney general, Republican legislative leaders have sought outside counsel to represent the Legislature in a wide range of high-profile legal battles including redistricting, laws passed during the 2018 lame-duck session and Michael Gableman’s failed investigation into the 2020 election.
Divided government has proven lucrative for the private law firms that legislative leaders have hired, many of whom have ties to the national GOP and the Wisconsin Department of Justice under former Republican state attorneys general. [emphasis added]
