Evergleam aluminum Christmas trees on South 8th Street, Manitowoc, Wisconsin (part 2)


During the 1960s, Manitowoc was the center of the universe when it came to the manufacture of aluminum Christmas trees.

“We were selling from a half million to a million trees a year for a while,” recalled Jerry Waak, former head of sales for the company that produced and sold more than 70 percent of the shiny trees in the 1960s

Aluminum Specialties became the largest manufacturer of the trees; and at its peak – employed 750 people to make Christmas trees that evolved over time. 
"They started out as straight needle and they added the pompom tips and then they did things like frosting the needles – basically crimping aluminum chaff,” Kapler says.

The Mad Hatter, a costume shop, is located at 901 South 8th Street.
