Bridge Club Provides Impetus for Pittsville Community Library 36 Years Ago

Kohlbeck column:  Card players envision local library.  (Wisconsin Rapids Tribune, 10/29/2012)

Excerpt:    The first public library in Pittsville was in two corner rooms of the community hall, which formerly housed the city council chambers. Creola was hired at that time o become the first city librarian. Its development and usage took off like wild fire.

The small library facility soon outgrew its space, and the board was faced with more decision making.

With the driving force of the library board, community leaders and library enthusiasts, a fund drive was started in the early 1990s with a goal of building an adequately sized library for the Pittsville area.

Led by a sizable personal donation by Burt and Shirley Iverson, the fund drive got off to a rousing start. A replica of a thermometer showed the goal and the continuing donations that trickled in from towns, businesses, service organizations and individuals, until the point was reached to begin construction.

As library president Bushman proudly stated, “On June 12, 1994, we had an open house to show off our free public library, which made our volunteer effort worthwhile. It enabled us to have the resources to help young and old to become better educated through reading and to make use of other library learning tools.”

Pittsville is located 18 miles west/northwest of Wisconsin Rapids.  The library is a member of the South Central Library System.
