Excerpt: For a third time, John Krueger has asked the Appleton Board of Education to reconsider a district materials review panel's denial of another parent's book challenge.
And Monday, after board member Jeff Knezel said he was "troubled" there could be "some question whether we handled this properly," the school board agreed to discuss the matter at its next meeting.
Board President Sharon Fenlon said afterward she "assumes we will talk about the challenge and clarifying the second additional challenge — was it a new challenge or an appeal —but we will not debate the merits of the book."
In fall, an East High School parent questioned the use of the novel "The Body of Christopher Creed" in ninth-grade communication arts as age inappropriate because of its profanity and other concerns. She asked it be moved to grades 11 or 12.
The young adult novel by Carol Plum-Ucci depicts the devastating effects of teen-age intolerance on misfits.
Mr. Krueger is persistent.
