Excerpt: The Flint Public Library is in danger of closing unless voters approve a millage increase to fund it, library supporters said.
In August, voters will be asked to approve paying 1.4 mills — which includes a 0.9 mill renewal of an existing millage — or else face shuttering what some have touted as one of the community’s most beloved treasures.
“There is never a good time for a millage increase in Flint but we see this is a need,” said Nat Burtley, vice president of the library’s board of trustees. “We are an award-winning library and we don’t want our community to lose that. Our library is one of the jewels of this community.”
The Citizens for the Flint Public Library launched a “keep our library” campaign Wednesday, noting a 23 percent staff reduction since 2004.
