Proposal to Increase Fines at Seattle Public Library

Link to July 26 Seattle Times article, "Seattle Public Library proposes higher late-book fines".

Excerpt: Fines will go up at the Seattle Public Library, under a proposal released Monday by the library.

The daily fine for an overdue book, CD, or DVD would change from 15 cents a day to 25 cents a day.

The daily fine for an overdue interlibrary loan (an item borrowed from outside The Seattle Public Library) would change from 25 cents a day to $1 a day.

The daily fine for an overdue reference resource would change from 15 cents a day to $1 a day.

The library is making $3 million in cuts this year because of the economic downturn. It has already cut hours, reduced the book budget by nearly $500,000 and will shut down for a week Aug. 30-Sept. 6.

In addition to the increase in fines, the proposed print charge from library computers would increase from 10 cents to 15 cents per page.
