Source: NBC News/Marist Poll
Two issues that have already emerged as potential litmus tests for conservative Republicans are the national education standards known as Common Core and immigration reform. A couple of speakers at the conservative Freedom Summit last month in Des Moines mocked former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for supporting common core and being “soft” on illegal immigration.
However, a solid majority of the Republican electorate — 57 percent in the NBC/Marist poll —would find a candidate who supports Common Core either entirely or mostly acceptable. Thirty-six percent say such a candidate would be entirely or mostly unacceptable. An even bigger majority, 65 percent, of Iowa registered voters are fine with a candidate who supports Common Core.
