The steep rise in COVID-19 cases comes amid the increasing prevalence of the omicron variant, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says spreads more easily.
The CDC says more data is needed to know the illness severity of the omicron variant, but some studies suggest that it causes milder symptoms.
Nonetheless, the state's hospitals were stretched thin when omicron hit.

Getting vaccinated is an important way to protect yourself and others from getting Covid. Because of extremely high Covid-19 transmission in Milwaukee County right now, unvaccinated people are at an extremely high risk. Vaccinated people are at lower risk. [emphasis added]
