But the measure was opposed by former President Donald Trump, who called it a “Democrat trap;” by the top House Republican, Kevin McCarthy; and by the top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell, raising doubts about its Senate prospects. 
McCarthy said the commission should look at other “forms of political violence in America.” McConnell said other investigations of the storming of the Capitol were sufficient and contended this commission would be "slanted," saying Democrats would control staff hiring. 
Some Republicans in Congress acknowledged this week their fears that the commission would be politically beneficial to Democrats and interfere with the GOP’s campaign messaging going into the 2022 midterm elections.
