Excerpt: At the corner of 11th Avenue and J Street, the new central library is rising out of the ground.
It's an Erector set at full scale -- towers of rebar steel, embedded in columns of pure white concrete and a big, 60-foot-wide, three-story-high gravity arch that will act like a rainbow welcoming future patrons seeking truth and pleasure in books, music and Internet connected computers. (Its real job is to hold up the floors above.)
"It will become a focal for downtown and San Diego," said Mayor Jerry Sanders at the first public hard-hat tour of the site Thursday.
He took no credit for the project, in the works for decades, but acknowledged donors, library lovers and construction workers sitting under a makeshift tent.
