Even though they're no long in control, the Ottawa Impact Looney Tunes Show continues

Melissa Frick reports:
At the top of the letter, which can be viewed here, Commissioner Joe Moss used the official Ottawa County letterhead and logo, sparking concerns among several residents and elected officials about whether his letter could be construed as being the directive of the county.
A week later, commissioners Allison Miedema and Sylvia Rhodea also sent letters to Mantella using the Ottawa County letterhead, both urging GVSU to end all diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts and “protect women’s sports.”
The letters from Moss, Miedema and Rhodea – who are all part of the ultra-conservative political faction Ottawa Impact – led to debate on social media about whether they had misused the county letterhead.

Child exploitation in the Name of the Lord (#120 in a series)

Photo and headline:  PA Homepage, 4/11/2025

Vivian Muniz reports:
From April 7 through April 11, state police began a child predator sting in Bradford County, aiming to identify offenders involved in the possession, distribution, and production of child sexual abuse material, as well as locate victims of child exploitation.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, detectives responded to 15 homes investigating “internet-related” crimes against children. As a result, seven residential search warrants were executed, leading to the following six arrests:

Will the real Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wisconsin) please stand up

HeadlineMilwaukee Journal Sentinel, 4/11/2025

“I like the way it’s playing out, actually,” Rep. Scott Fitzgerald said Tuesday, when asked if Congress should play an oversight role on the implementation of the tariffs. “I think after a couple days, it’s playing out pretty well.”
The comments came during a tumultuous week that saw global markets plunge in the wake of Trump’s wide-ranging reciprocal tariff announcement and then temporarily rebound on Wednesday as Trump walked back the plan, imposing a 90-day pause on higher reciprocal tariff rates. U.S. markets dipped again on Thursday.

Just like Scott Walker did: Maybe Trump also has a consolation prize for Brad Schimel

Headline:  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 4/11/2025
His term as a Waukesha County judge will end July 31 after 6 1/2 years on the bench. He landed the job when then-Gov. Scott Walker appointed him to the vacant post after Schimel lost his re-election bid for attorney general in November 2018. The two Republicans worked out the deal without Schimel even applying for job.

Trump makes the United States a scary place to visit

HeadlineUSA Today, 4/10/2025

Kathleen Wong reports:
Amid recent travel advisories warning those coming to the U.S. plus strengthened immigration enforcement, many international travelers are starting to turn away from the U.S. as a destination. Between January and March 2025, foreign arrivals dropped by around 4.4% from those first three months last year, according to data from the National Travel and Tourism Office. In a March year-over-year comparison, that reduction doubles to almost 10%.
At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport – consistently ranked the busiest airport in the world and a hub for international connections – 189,973 non-U.S. passengers passed through its terminals between March 1 and April 7, according to data by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That's an almost 5% decrease from the same time last year.

GET ME REWRITE: International tourists are likely to find a lily-white American history if Trump gets his way

Headline:  BBC, 4/9/2025

Lynn Brown reports on Trump's efforts to restore lily whiteness to American history:
On 27 March, Trump signed an executive order titled Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History, arguing that there has been "a concerted and widespread effort to rewrite our Nation's history, replacing objective facts with a distorted narrative driven by ideology rather than truth". The order took specific aim at the Smithsonian Institution, whose 21 museums, 21 libraries and many other research and cultural centres comprise the world's largest museum complex and were visited by nearly 17 million people in 2024.

Measles and whooping cough outbreaks: If only Bill Cassidy had found his spine 57 days ago

Bill Cassidy M.D. is chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP).  On February 13, 2025, he voted to confirm RFKjr as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  He should have known better but couldn't find his spine.

Headline:  Pro Publica, 4/11/2025
In the past six months, two babies in Louisiana have died of pertussis, the disease commonly known as whooping cough.
Washington state recently announced its first confirmed death from pertussis in more than a decade.
Idaho and South Dakota each reported a death this year, and Oregon last year reported two as well as its highest number of cases since 1950.
While much of the country is focused on the spiraling measles outbreak concentrated in the small, dusty towns of West Texas, cases of pertussis have skyrocketed by more than 1,500% nationwide since hitting a recent low in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Deaths tied to the disease are also up, hitting 10 last year, compared with about two to four in previous years. Cases are on track to exceed that total this year.

Bill got...

Dr. Bill chose to preserve his political future over saving lives.  Unconscionable!  America deserve an explanation and an apology!

Letters. We get letters. Some Iowa voters fess up to making a mistake voting for Trump

HeadlineDes Moines Register, 4/10/2025

Many of us already knew this on November 9, 2016.
With markets nosediving across the globe and given all the current reports of huge anti-Trump crowds, it’s clearly time for all those who voted for President Donald Trump to recognize that it was a huge mistake. He’s been doing everything he can to destroy our country and its’ relationships with all of our allies, while catering to Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

DO YOUR JOB!

Headline:  WATT Poultry, 4/9/2025

Roy Graber reports:
The National Turkey Federation (NTF) has been somewhat limited with its outreach to federal officials in the second Donald Trump administration, as key leadership positions within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have not been filled.
NTF Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Lindy Chiaia and Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Dale Nellor gave an update on the governmental matters during an April 9 presentation at PEAK in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Chiaia noted that Brooke Rollins has been confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and has been very active since taking office, frequently travelling and making agency announcements.
However, other senior level leaders are still lacking.
