Knight, who represents Simi Valley, Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley in the 25th Congressional District, was also vastly outspent by Hill. 

In a year when record numbers of women ran for public office, Hill described the midterm election as a big step toward equal representation.

In 2014, Republican Steve Knight was first elected to Congress with 53.3% of the vote.  His opponent was also a Republican, as California voters approved Proposition 14 in 2011 allowing for 'wide-open' elections.  In 2016, Knight's Democratic opponent shaved 2/10s of a percentage point off the incumbent's margin of victory.
