More evidence that Hollywood is out of fresh ideas

IMD (June 1027)
2017 has been a record year for the seemingly endless number of Hollywood sequels, reboots and remakes coming out. By the end of the year, Hollywood will have released 43 movies in one of these categories. These kinds of movies, while not very original, are thought to be safe bet cash cows for Hollywood studios. But, they are also lamented by Hollywood’s insiders who prophesize that these big budget movies will implode the industry once a majority of them start fail. With movie theatres being flooded with sequels, reboots and remakes, it seems that the US movie industry is either heading towards implosion or disruption.  [emphasis added]

And guess what happened in 2023?

The Chive, 8/25/2023
In the year 2023, there are currently 900 sequels, prequels, and remakes in the works right now. Ok, that’s an exaggeration but it is an absurdly unnecessary amount and I’m gonna take a wild guess that only like 6% of them will be good. This list is proof that you just need to leave things be!

And the most recent box office tallies in 2024 indicate the situation is getting worse.

GET ME REWRITE: Clown car conductor Marjorie Taylor Greene gets smacked down by a huge majority of her GOP caucus

Headline:  New York Times, 5/8/2024
The vote to kill the effort was an overwhelming 359 to 43, with seven voting “present.” Democrats flocked to Mr. Johnson’s rescue, with all but 39 of them voting with Republicans to block the effort to oust him.
Members of the minority party in the House have never propped up the other party’s speaker, and when the last Republican to hold the post, Kevin McCarthy, faced a removal vote last fall, Democrats voted en masse to allow the motion to move forward and then to jettison him, helping lead to his historic ouster.
This time, the Democratic support made the critical difference, allowing Mr. Johnson, who has a minuscule majority, to avoid a removal vote altogether. While for weeks Ms. Greene had appeared to be on a political island in her drive to get rid of yet another G.O.P. speaker, 11 Republicans ultimately voted to allow her motion to move forward.

Lucy Ebel recall marks beginning of the end for ultra-right Impact Ottawa Looney Tunes Clown Show Circus

Headline:  mlive, 5/8/2024

The rest of the Looney Tunes Ottawa Impact cast should be shittin' their britches.
Voters in the Holland area decided to oust an Ottawa County commissioner tied to an ultra-conservative platform.
In a recall election, incumbent Republican Lucy Ebel lost to Democratic challenger Chris Kleinjans.
The vote was 2,502 for Kleinjans and 1,665 for Ebel.
Ebel was elected in November 2022 and took office in January 2023 as part of the Ottawa Impact political platform. They hold a majority on the board.

Ottawa County is not as solidly Republicans as it used to be.  In 1984, Ronald Reagan won the county by nearly 60 percentage points.  By 2020, Donald Trump's margin of victory was sliced to 21.4 percentage points.

3rd-party candidates received 17.9% of vote in 1992, 7.3% of vote in 1996, 7.2% in 2016;

GET ME REWRITE: The truth is, grievance-filled career politicians like Misti Kristi are what's wrong with America

Worst-ever launch of vice presidential campaign.

HeadlineNew York Times, 5/7/2024
In one sense, Kristi Noem has had a wildly successful rollout of her new book: America can’t stop talking about it.
But all the chatter is not for the reasons Ms. Noem, the conservative governor of South Dakota, might have expected when she finished “No Going Back,” a memoir that recounts her political career. The book appears aimed at raising her profile as a MAGA loyalist while former President Donald J. Trump weighs his choices for running mate. Just a month ago, Ms. Noem had been widely seen as a contender
Instead of talking up her conservative bona fides, however, Ms. Noem has spent the last week on national television defending a grisly account in the book in which she shoots her dog in a gravel pit. The killing of the dog, a 14-month-old wire-haired pointer named Cricket, has drawn bipartisan criticism and scrutiny.

Misti Kristi's previous book had an unoriginal title.

GET ME REWRITE: Iowa is white, but not as white as the school district Governor Kim Reynolds just visited

Demographics:  Adel/Desoto/Minburn, Iowa and U.S. (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts)
HeadlineDes Moines Register, 5/7/2024
Reynolds is hoping to see more lessons like this in elementary schools around Iowa in the coming years as House File 2618 is implemented. The law has new testing requirements intended to help aspiring Iowa teachers improve their literacy instruction and requires schools to provide personalized plans to elementary school students who are not reading at grade level[emphasis added]

From the Cedar Rapids Gazette: (3/8/2024)
According to the National Education Association, the average salary for starting teachers in Iowa is $39,208, which ranks 35th among the 50 states.

Reynolds recently signed a bill that includes increasing the starting salary for teachers to $50,000.

So there's that.

GET ME REWRITE: Huntington Beach (California) approves campaign to ban books from public library

HeadlineOrange County Register, 3/21/2024
The Huntington Beach City Council this week further outlined how a community library board would review books for sexual content to be either removed from the children's section or not purchased at all. The council, in October, ordered for the board to be created, which critics called a book-banning system.

He said that central office spending is just 3.24% of the district’s budget and pointed out that the district spends three times that much on bond and interest payments from recent building renovations.
“We’re building heavy,” he said. “So what is the issue? The district has $83 million in debt that won’t reduce until 2028. What’s the cost per student to have 130 students in a multi-million dollar building? That cost is astronomical but we don’t worry about that.”
“We’ve got this fascination with bricks and mortar,” he said. “Nobody wants to stand up here… Save Our Schools, 2 Schools 1 Fight, and say ‘Yes, we are the reason the district is in debt as deeply as it is.’
“Warren County is aging,” he said, with high poverty and high fixed incomes rates. “We ignore that because we want mascots. We need two schools at most. One most likely,” arguing that a consolidated school would still not be large.  [emphasis added]

What's the matter with Iowa? Kimmi the Clown and the GOP's inability to face today's realities (immigration edition)

Headline:  Des Moines Register, 5/7/2024
Sitting in a pew at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Waterloo where he is pastor, Hernandez rehashed his journey into exile more than 30 years ago — a move that forced him to leave behind his life and family in Nicaragua with no return date guaranteed. In March 1987, Hernandez was 19 years old and a seminary student in Matagalpa when he led his classmates in a strike against the Nicaraguan government and soon faced threats for his participation.
He said his life and the safety of his loved ones were on the line as he joined the thousands of Nicaraguans in fleeing the country to find refuge. He said he first turned to Guatemala before heading for the United States.
It's a story he says he's told many times before but one that's still tough to remember — especially as Iowa lawmakers continue to crack down on immigration policies and target a population he considers crucial to the state's economy and workforce.

GET ME REWRITE: Wisconsin GOP legislative leaders take their cue from the man in the robe

Headline:  Wisconsin State Journal,, 5/7/2024
Republicans nationwide have increasingly targeted DEI positions in recent years. In Wisconsin, legislative Republicans withheld about $800 million in state funds directed to the Universities of Wisconsin until the UW system agreed late last year to repurpose some diversity positions.
As Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, suggested shortly after the UW system deal was struck, the Joint Legislative Audit Committee on Tuesday voted to order the Legislative Audit Bureau to conduct the audit.

Barry Lindemann
Headline: Las Vegas Review-Journal 5/4/2024
Barry Lindemann, an asset manager, believes Republicans gave away the 2020 presidential election “as much as it was stolen by the Democrats.”
He repeated similar concerns of Brown’s that the Democratic-led legislature implemented new voting rules ahead of the election that included mail-in ballots and ballot harvesting.
“Republicans complained but did little to combat this legislative quandary until the results were a loss for the party,” Lindemann said.
Lindemann does not believe Trump violated any peaceful transfer of power. He did not say whether he’d accept the results of the election if he loses.
