MISCREANT PREACHERS: "A significant allegation' in the Name of the Lord (#335 in a series)

An Indiana megachurch that has long defended its pastor from internal and external criticism changed course Wednesday and fired him. Northview Church, a multi-site with 14 locations from Indianapolis to Lafayette, announced the dismissal of C. J. Johnson in an email that assured members the decision wasn’t as sudden as it seemed. 

“We recognize that this news may bring a range of emotions,” the June 10 email said. “The elders did not arrive at this decision quickly or lightly.” 

The dismissal is effective immediately. The email said that the church investigated “a significant allegation” last year and that all three executive pastors serving under Johnson brought additional concerns to the elders last month. 

Church leaders did not explain the nature of those concerns, saying only that they included “leadership style,” “interpersonal conduct” and “behaviors.”

"An overseer must be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money."  (1 Timothy 3:2-3)
