The company that Chip Roy keeps

HeadlineAlterNet, 3/23/2024
Meanwhile, far-right Republicans like Texas Congressman Chip Roy have made comments like, "Everyone that I know and trust about the border, about overall spending, see it as a complete and total failure and a capitulation by Republicans. And leadership worked the deal, so it's on leadership.

GET ME REWRITE: Despicable Long Island GOP counts on transphobia to give it an edge

HeadlineNew York Times, 3/20/2024
A ban on transgender women playing on women’s sports teams at county-owned sports facilities has turned a Long Island county into the latest battleground for conservatives who have put cultural issues at the center of a nationwide political strategy.
Restricting the rights of transgender people has become the focus of those efforts, and the ban in densely populated Nassau County has infuriated L.G.B.T.Q. activists and Democratic officials, who have challenged it in court.Lre

GET ME REWRITE: Recall effort gets under Robin Vos's skin, becomes obsession now that legislature has adjourned

Headline:  WTMJ, 3/21/2024
In joining Wisconsin’s Afternoon News, State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos dismissed the recent attempt to recall him from his position as a “half-hearted” effort lacking validity.
He told WTMJ’s Julia Fello and Greg Matzek that his team’s investigation into the recall effort found between 300-to-400 duplicate signatures; and that more than half of the petition’s signatures came from outside the eligible area.
For all of us who care about election integrity, the idea of saying that we’re going to allow felons to do things illegally and that we’re going to have fraudulent signatures should concern us all,” Vos said. “We had a case where someone had dementia and she can’t even write her own name, but her name was on [the recall petition].”

Project 2025 GET ME REWRITE: Plutocrats like Charles Koch pour big bucks into effort to upend American democracy

Headline:  Raw Story, 3/21/2024:
The Heritage Foundation launched Project 2025 last April to develop policy recommendations and identify thousands of political appointees who could carry out its agenda in the next Republican administration. And groups linked to conservative activist Leonard Leo and the Koch network have now contributed more than $55 million to the initiative, according to an Accountable.US review shared exclusively with NBC News. “
The ‘MAGA blueprint’ isn’t a one-off project — it’s backed by the same far-right figures who have long dictated the conservative agenda,” said Tony Carrk, executive director of Accountable.US. “Leo, Koch and others should be held to account for propping up a policy platform that puts special interests over everyday Americans and poses an existential threat to our democracy.”  [emphasis added]

Timeshare fraud: Chatting up and selling dreams to the extremely gullible

Headline:  New York Times, 3/21/2024

It boggles the mind that someone can be so cavalierly with their money.
Mr. Finn realized how serious this type of fraud was becoming four years ago, when he received a call from a desperate woman whose mother had wired $1.2 million, her entire life savings, to Mexico to sell her timeshare. [emphasis added]
The timeshare industry is booming, with $10.5 billion in sales in 2022, a 30 percent jump from the year before, according to the American Resort Development Association. Nearly 10 million American households own timeshares, the association said, spending an average of about $22,000 for their investment on top of annual fees of around $2,000. Most timeshares are beach resorts.

Vocabulary lesson: edgelord

Dictionary definitionMerriam-Webster
Headline:  New York Times, 3/21/2024
At the time, Reddit was known as one of the darkest parts of the internet — an anything-goes forum where trolls, extremists and edgelords reigned. Light on rules and overseen by an army of volunteer moderators, Reddit — which once hosted popular communities devoted to nonconsensual pornography, overt racism and violent misogyny, among other topics — was often spoken of in the same breath as online cesspools like 4chan and SomethingAwful.

According to Merrian-Webster, the first-known use of 'edgelord' occurred in 2015.

Shawn Fesler, a 45-year-old poll respondent who identifies as a Republican and who agreed to a follow-up interview, said he’s among those who have a negative view of Grassley.
“Senators and Congress should have term limits like the presidents do,” he said.
“I don't really get behind the career politicians.” Fesler, an Ottumwa resident, said he has a more favorable view of Ernst. He likes that she has been more open to same-sex marriages and that she voted for legislation guaranteeing federal recognition of any marriage between two people if the union was valid in the state where they wed.

From The Hill
Republicans pushing reforms to Social Security argue that raising the retirement age would not cut benefits and would be phased in slowly so as not to affect people near retirement age.
But others in the party warn that talking about delaying Social Security benefits in an election year is political malpractice and would give Democrats a golden opportunity to accuse GOP candidates of wanting to cut Social Security.  [emphasis added]

Vos, who earlier this week described organizers of the recall as “whack jobs and morons,” also claimed in the challenge that petitions submitted to the commission earlier this month were “plagued with fraud and criminality,” providing examples of at least 20 individuals named on the petitions who claim their signatures were forged.
“This failed effort has proven to be what I said it would be from the beginning — a waste of time and resources,” Vos said in a statement. “That is especially true for the residents whose identities have been stolen and the local officials who must now investigate these matters.”

Just like you.

HeadlineNew York Times, 3/15/2024
Ms. Britt has fended off reporters on Capitol Hill in recent days but did give an extensive interview about the speech and its aftermath to one of her colleagues, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, on his podcast. Though she did not directly address the part of the speech that has drawn the most scrutiny, she and Mr. Cruz were both defiant, saying that the extensive coverage showed that the news media was out to censor her.
They want to silence a conservative woman for speaking out on this topic,” Ms. Britt told her colleague,[childishly whining after having just regaled a worldwide audience with her most cringe-worthy SOTU response.] “They don’t want to bring light and help the women who are actually being trafficked.” “
"They view you as an enormous threat,” Mr. Cruz replied, [showing the world once again what a pompous airbag he is].  He added that a young Republican mother of school-age children presented a stark contrast with Mr. Biden and caricatures of Republicans.

If no-fault divorce is eliminated, those seeking to end a marriage will have to prove other elements by clear and convincing evidence, she said. That evidence can be subjective, taking more of the court’s time and resources, she said.
“On a practical note, each judge would be singularly charged with weighing if adultery can be proven, or insanity can be proven, or if extreme cruelty can be proven,” Edwards said. “Those are very subjective calls on a judge’s part that would have our courts backed up for years.”
People could be waiting years to get a divorce finalized, she said.

Project 2025 focuses on packing the next GOP administration with extreme loyalists to former President Donald Trump.

Mark Kampf
Headline: Seattle Times, 3/19/2024
Kampf stepped into the position in 2022. He had been recruited by Jim Marchant [days 1094 and 1210], a Republican candidate for secretary of state that year who claimed every Nevada elected official since 2006 was “installed by the deep state cabal” and led a group of 17 election deniers across the country running mainly for state election offices.
Marchant, along with 15 of the remaining 16 Republican coalition members, lost their races as part of a larger rebuke of far-right candidates casting doubt on elections in 2022.
When Kempf led the hand-count of votes in the 2022 midterms, it looked vastly different than the county commission’s original plan to ditch voting machines altogether.
