Clifford flourished during the 1st half of the 20th century, spending nearly 50 years in the top 100 and speaking at #57 in 1909.  Beginning in the early 1980s, however, it was an increasingly steep fall into oblivion.

Paley, found at Sunset and Gower in Hollywood, quietly began their lunch service a few weeks ago, but has just started offering dinner as well. While the food is particularly delicious, the space itself is perhaps even more impressive. Once the home of Brittingham's Radio Center Restaurant for CBS Studios and before that the site of film studio Nestor Film Company—considered the first film production company in Hollywood—Paley is part of an onslaught of development and new upscale eateries that are opening ahead of Viacom and Netflix's move to the block. The restaurant takes its name from the late CBS CEO, William S. Paley, whose name may already be familiar to you as he also founded the Paley Center for Media.

Don't expect burger-flipping robots to take over restaurant kitchens anytime soon

Posted on YouTube on 3/9/2017

The video notes that CaliBurger hopes to install Flippy robots in 50 restaurants worldwide.  50 down.  14,999,950 to go.  (McDonald's, on the other hand, operates nearly 37,000 restaurants worldwide.)

Hamburger-making robot company raises $18 million.  (Axios, 6/9/2017)
(Of course, not every restaurant in the world serves burgers.}  Founded in 2009, Momentum Machines is developing food-preparing robots, the first one of which supposedly can prep hundreds of made-to-order hamburgers in an hour ― from raw ingredients to packaging. In other words, it might be the future of fast-food prep work.

Date when some other burger-flippin' robot videos were posted on YouTube:

Greetings from Pershing Square, Los Angeles

Timeline:

  • 1866.  Block 15 set aside as a town square.  No funds provided for improvements
  • 1870.  Renamed Los Angeles Park, which was fenced in with trees planted around the perimeter.
  • 1910.  $80,000 renovation.  Architect John Parkinson's design creates a symmetrical plan with walkways and ornamental plantings.
  • 1918. Renamed Pershing Square, in honor of John Pershing, commander of U.S. forces in what later became known as World War I.
  • 1930s and 1940s.  Gathering place for the marginalized
  • Early 1950s.  Renovation includes subterranean parking garage (access at lower right in postcard) and a walking path around the perimeter of a fenced-in lawn area.
  • 1990s.  Another redesign, which KCET shrugs off as not worth describing.

Digital Age is Slow to Arrive in Rural America.  (The New York Times, 2/18/2011)

Excerpt:   As the world embraces its digital age — two billion people now use the Internet regularly — the line delineating two Americas has become more broadly drawn. There are those who have reliable, fast access to the Internet, and those, like about half of the 27,867 people here in Clarke County, who do not.

In rural America, only 60 percent of households use broadband Internet service, according to a report released Thursday by the Department of Commerce. That is 10 percent less than urban households. Over all, 28 percent of Americans do not use the Internet at all.

The report was developed in conjunction with a national broadband map that was also released Thursday, as part of a billion-dollar effort to improve Internet access in the United States, particularly in rural areas

Climate change as a matter of fact: Brazil:

Reported in Infectious disease collides with changing climate.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 5/24/2017)
But climate alone cannot account for Brazil’s latest bout with yellow fever, according to Chame, coordinator of the foundation’s biodiversity research unit.
Other contributors include the clearing of forests for farms and plantations, an activity that brings humans into areas thick with mosquitoes; the grinding rural poverty that makes insect repellent a luxury for many villagers; and the reluctance of many Brazilians to receive the yellow fever vaccine.

Bradley Foundation (address)

Original 11/21/2011 post, "Wisconsin's Conservative Bradley Foundation Manages to Avoid the Spotlight", starts here.

From local roots, Bradley Foundation builds conservative empire. (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 11/19/2011)

Excerpt: Less than a week after being elected governor, Scott Walker and his wife met privately with one of the most powerful philanthropic forces behind America's conservative movement.

It wasn't the Koch brothers - the bogeymen for the American left.

On Nov. 8, 2010, the Walkers broke bread at the upscale Bacchus restaurant in the Cudahy Tower with the board and senior staff of the Milwaukee-based Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.

With more than $600 million in assets, the Bradley Foundation provides a cornerstone for the conservative movement in Wisconsin and across America. It has been the financial backer behind public policy experiments that started in the state and spread across the nation - including welfare reform, public vouchers for private schools and, this year, cutbacks in public employee benefits and collective bargaining.

Yet outside conservative circles, the foundation has kept a low profile. It receives a fraction of the attention given the billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch and the Scaife family
.

Very quietly, Wisconsin's Mike Gallagher worms his way to top echelon of Congressional conservatives

Instead, Gallagher’s first 100 days have been refreshing and may portend the type of congressional vision offered by a new class of millennial leaders. Gallagher appears intent on offering bold reforms to address key policy concerns that have the potential to unleash American ingenuity, while at the same time taking the necessary steps to secure the homeland.

What he has done is align himself with the most conservative members of Congress.

EPA Director Scott Pruit will do and say anything to promote and favor fossil fuel industry

Quite simply, the coal sector has added about 1,000 jobs since October 2016—not 50,000. Coal could not have added 50,000 jobs in the last eight months, since that is essentially the size of the entire coal industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pruitt’s statistic would otherwise imply that entire coal mining industry started in October.
