After 91 years, flying fish but no plying boat as the Blanche W ends its Catalina Island run.  (Los Angeles Times, 9/6/2015)
The 35 passengers aboard the Blanche W sat on gleaming mahogany benches on this cruise to see flying fish. Deckhand Maui Hernandez scanned the waves with a 40-million candlepower carbon-arc searchlight that came from a World War I battleship.
"There's some!" she shouted.
The passengers whipped around to see dozens of wriggling black-and-silver missiles soaring over the water. One rose about 7 feet, hovered like a butterfly and landed with a splash. Another torpedoed the side of the boat. Yet another glided into the gaping bill of a hungry pelican.

You can now ride the Cyclone, a 50-minute adventure that will set you back $34 -- $30, if you're a kid.  (Age not specified.)

From the Wisconsin Union Historical Timeline

1937
On May 4, 1937, the Board of Regents authorizes the Union to proceed with plans for construction of the Union Theater and new west wing facilities. The concept of including a theater in the Union had existed during the early planning days before the Union was built, but a lack of funds prevented its construction until the late 1930's.

1939
The Union Theater opens with the performance of "Taming of the Shrew" staring Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. The Theater Wing addition also includes new Hoofer quarters, a craftshop, and eight bowling lanes.

1969
During the political and social unrest of the 1960s, Union programs reflect the times, including a week-long symposium called "The Black Revolution: To What Ends?" Speakers include Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, and Nathan Wright. Also in 1969, the University cancels a production of Peter Pan in the Play Circle Theater, which leads to a campus-wide ban on nudity in all University drama programs.

Donald Trump's pants on fire

Quoted in Big winner under Trump's tax plan for 'everyday Americans': Donald J Trump.  (The Guardian, 9/28/2017)
Kansas passed a similar tax cut in 2012 and it almost broke the bank. The cuts had to be reversed as the state’s coffers dried up.
“Trump is carving out a special loophole for his own businesses and calling it a small-business tax cut,” said TJ Helmstetter of the group Americans For Tax Fairness.
The tax plan that the Trump administration outlined on Wednesday is a potentially huge windfall for the wealthiest Americans. It would not directly benefit the bottom third of the population. As for the middle class, the benefits appear to be modest.

'We are a cautionary tale': Kansas feels the pain of massive Trump-style tax cuts In 2012, Kansas did what Donald Trump wants to do: it introduced huge tax cuts to try to boost growth. Today, the state is out of money – and residents are angry.  (The Guardian, May 15, 2017)
The plan’s similarity to the one that has left Kansas in crisis is “unbelievable”, according to Duane Goossen, the former Kansas secretary of administration.
The economic spirit behind Trump’s plan is Arthur Laffer – the go-to guru of “supply-side economics” since the Reagan era, and one of the architects of Kansas governor Sam Brownback’s original tax plan.

Here's the downside:  Montreal is becoming an increasingly unaffordable place to live.

Rick Pitino: From Hall of Fame to Hall of Shame

In a word:  sordid.  The move came one day after federal prosecutors accused two unidentified Cardinals coaches of directing money provided by the university’s apparel partner, Adidas, to two high school prospects, and three months after Pitino and his program were sanctioned by the N.C.A.A. for a scandal in which prostitutes were provided to players and teenage recruits.

I move the following changes be made to the eligibility criteria for coaches.

I suspect the Naismith folks will take a 'boys-will-be-boys' approach and look the other way, which is why I suggest 3 words be added here.

Loretta was a very steady performer from 1900 to 1960, never dropping below #138 and peaking at #62 in 1938.  Loretta Young's movie credits date back to the late 1920s, but it wasn't until the 1940s -- she won a Best Actress Oscar for The Farmer's Daughter (1947) -- when she really hit her stride.  Nevertheless, she probably deserves some credit for that 1930s bump.  She quickly fell our of favor after 1970.
