Joe Moss:  Danger, amateur at work!

According to state statute, commissioners do not decide their own pay, but appointees to a special compensation committee take up the issue every two years. The committee has seven members. 

Moss said the local committee, the Ottawa County Officers Compensation Committee, did vote April 11 on a proposal for a 60 percent pay raise for commissioners that would take effect in 2025. But there were only four members present and the vote was 3-1 in favor of the raise. 

A state statute, though, says that a majority of the entire committee must concur on a pay raise for it to be valid. Moss said that, because only three of seven members voted yes, the proposal was not valid.
