Both the Imperial Garden restaurant and the neighboring Garden Asian Market will now be part of a 10-story redevelopment proposed at the Middleton property, the developer said Wednesday. 

Tom Sanford of Sanford Enterprises, a Madison-based commercial real estate company that is currently acting as the project’s developer, said last month that the American-Chinese restaurant couldn’t move into a future residential building there because of the smoke and cooking smells the restaurant generates. 

It was unclear whether Imperial Garden, which has been at 2039 Allen Blvd. since 1981, would move to another location. 

That property and the Asian Garden Market property at 6136 University Ave. are owned by Henry Chen, who founded Imperial Garden. The restaurant is now owned by longtime head chef Zhenxi Ou. People are also reading…
