Apparently, Sheboygan Alderman David Van Akkeren Doesn't Love and Value Libraries
Finance Committee leaves budget cutting up to council. Panel uses city reserve money to plug budget hole. (Sheboygan Press, 10/24/2011)
Excerpt: Ald. David Van Akkeren quizzed Mead Public Library Director Sharon Winkle on her budget, especially spending more than $400,000 on new books and other materials.
"I just can't see funding it at the same level (as past years), considering where we are," Van Akkeren said, adding that there were other needs in the city that needed to be paid for, like street repairs.
Bohren argued for approving the library's proposed budget, noting that it's almost $100,000 under this year's allocation and 7.8 percent of what would have been required if state funding formulas had not been changed. The library's budget passed the committee 2-1, with Van Akkeren voting against it.
The tax levy supporting Mead Public Library is $2,377,053, or 11 percent of the city's total tax levy, under the proposed budget.
